What to Do With a Box of Old Family Tapes

You do not need a perfect inventory. A rough count and a few photos are enough to begin.

Start with a rough count

Count full-size tapes separately from smaller camcorder tapes. Do not worry if you cannot identify everything yet.

Take a few clear photos

Photos of the front and side labels help identify formats and estimate the project. Include any reels, slides, or audio tapes in the same message.

Pick the most meaningful items first

If the box is large, begin with milestone events, family members you miss, unlabeled tapes, or anything needed for a gift or memorial.
