How to Tell What Kind of Camcorder Tape You Have

Small camcorder tapes can be confusing. Shape, size, and label clues usually point to the right format.

Look at the label first

Many tapes say VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, or MiniDV directly on the shell or sticker. If the label is handwritten, the shell shape still helps.

Compare the tape size

VHS-C is compact but chunkier than MiniDV. Hi8, Video8, and Digital8 often share a similar shell size. MiniDV tapes are smaller and usually feel more squared off.

Do not force playback

If you do not know the format, avoid trying random equipment. Send a photo instead and get help before the tape is handled more than necessary.
